RELAY FOR LIFE
|
On Friday, May 7, 2010, several local schools (Frazier, Charleroi, Ringgold and Belle Vernon) joined together to hold an event for the American Cancer Society - Relay for Life. Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. The BVA Planning Committee worked with the other schools since October, meeting once a month. Within the planning committee were six divisions: luminaria, survivor, entertainment, team recruitment, logistics and public relations.
The event was held at the Charleroi High School
track. Teams of people took turns walking or running around the
track. There were also many fun fundraisers to participate in,
such as a volleyball tournament, Zumba, Ships & Sailors, fun laps, and a
pizza eating contest. Along with the variety of fun activities, several serious and touching ceremonies were also conducted: the Opening Ceremony, Survivor Ceremony & Lap, Luminaria Ceremony, and Closing Ceremony. With 270 participants and 23 teams, BVA raised $15,300 for the American Cancer Society. Along with the other schools, the total donation was $51,700. Mrs. Giannamore, BVA's faculty coordinator for Relay for Life, stated, "The event requires quite a bit of planning and effort, but the people who participate are rewarded with a memorable day and a sense of accomplishment for volunteering for such a worthy cause." NICE JOB, LOCAL SCHOOL STUDENTS AND FACULTY!! |
